I was over at my aunt & uncle's house getting my hair cut. My cousin Sarah lives in St. George now but she comes out every 6 weeks for her regulars out here. It's incredibly convenient because I hate the anxiety that comes from sitting in a salon chair with wet hair and absolutely nothing to say. It makes me nervous. Sarah and I never run out of things to say. What with all the Bill Murray movies to quote.
When I got there my aunt said that she needed to go to See's Candy and asked what my favorites were. 1.) California brittle and 2.) lime truffle (which is a complete mystery because it is covered in white chocolate and I am opposed to that stuff on a moral level. Except that it is mighty tasty on those lime truffles.)(Do you think if we all work really hard we can come up with a different name for white chocolate. It's not chocolate. It's not even the same neighborhood. It's like 3 towns over and through a really creepy forest where hobos hang out. And I feel like it is an affront to chocolate to even call it that. So let's all work together to come up with a more appropriate name and then we'll start a letter writing campaign to get it officially changed. I'm sure I can convince my neighbor, the Congressman, to help us out. We can do this! Si se puede!!!!)
Where was I? Right, See's. But first an interesting side note: Sarah's favorites are also 1.) California brittle and 2.) lime truffle. Fascinating! Or maybe not because, well, we're related.
Okay, so I was wondering what your favorite See's candies are. You may have noticed that I love hearing what people's favorites are. It makes me feel like I got a glimpse into your soul. And because I'm feeling generous (and because I secretly want to be the Pioneer Woman when I grow up) I'm going to make it worth your while. If you leave a comment telling me what your favorites are and/or what new name you would give white chocolate and/or how many letters you would be willing to write in our forthcoming letter writing campaign (we'll make matching t-shirts!), you will be entered into a drawing to receive a gift certificate for a 1 pound box of See's candy. Winner to be announced tomorrow afternoon so get them in quick. And only one comment, cheater.

White chocolate is actually made from cocoa butter which comes from the same bean as chocolate...so in reality it could be considered a distant cousin of chocolate.
Chocolate covered caramels. Yum!
Yes, Chris, but so are certain soaps.
Since I am related I doubt I will win....even though I'm amazing and should win at everything. But I am a huge fan of your attempt to be like PW. Look at you reaching out to your fans with chocolate. I have no name for white chocolate, because I don't think it should exist. My favorite sees is also the California brittle, but I have always called it the brickle (sp?) bar. I just might have to stop at see's on my way home today. And I'm not sure if you remember how I single-handedly got you hundreds of illegal votes in the blog awards (even though they took 'em away...still bitter). So count me in for the campaign.
There are too many favorites to chose from at See's candy but I do love the bordeaux and butterscotch squares. When I used to work at the mall my manager would give me money to go get her a California brittle. Then she'd tell me to pick something out for myself. The See's ladies got to know me pretty well. They'd just look at me and ask "the usual?". Now we have a See's right across the street. How dangerous is that?
As far as the white chocolate goes I'd have to agree, it's not chocolate. I say we call it "that stuff they put on pretzels to make them worthwhile".
Scotchmallow - with the hard stuff (dark chocolate).
Anything in nuts and chews - in either dark or milk.
Lime truffle - oh, goodness me. That is a winning combination of limey-ness and the white shell substance.
Maybe we should just call it opaque bark.
I don't know the name of my favorite because I always get it out of a box without any name guide...anyway, it is dark chocolate, nuggaut, and nuts (maybe walnuts or is it almonds). Can someone help me out here? As for the white chocolate...I am usually not a fan except when it is in "Satan's Snack" (Corn Chex, Cherrios, and peanuts smothered in white chocolate) Or "Chocolate Covered Popcorn. YUM! No name though. Sorry!
Have you tried Toffee-ettes? They are Da-Bomb. (Does anybody ever say "the bomb" anymore, or am I just old, old, old?)
As far as a name for white chocolate...I'd just call it paste.
If I was a fan of See's candies at all I would jump on this free giveaway, but alas, my love of chocolates stops at a candy bar. Anything fancier than a Snickers doesn't wet my appetite. However, I'll admit that I've been able to semi-enjoy the little round ones with caramel in them. Simple is the way I go. That's my two cents. Oh, and in my opinion, white chocolate can be called paste. :-)
Milk chocolate covered caramels - no nuts. I also like the milk Chocolate covered Molasses chips. I actually went over to the See's website to remind myself of my choices and I notice that they never once refer to white chocolate. They leave it out of their descriptions entirely. How about we start calling white chocolate "Cire Blanche" a very loosely translated french term for "white wax"? Nothing like using French terms for ingredients in the tradition of "ganache" and "bechamel".
My favorites are the chocolate covered caramels, the mint truffles and the toffee. Oh my. I need chocolate. Please hold.
Okay, I've been thinking about the white chocolate business. In fact, I have also never understood why they think they're tricking you when they name it white chocolate. I like the French term idea, but since I don't know French I really can't compete that way. But I could use Italian, which makes everything sound romantic. How about "latte bianche". It just means white milk, but at least we're not claiming it's chocolate. Wendy, I'm totally copying you. I'm sorry. It's just that I am not creative myself.
bordeaux and raspberry creams are my favorites.
White chocolate reminds me of edible wax, maybe thats what we should call it.
Please be sure you are sitting down .. I'm from sc originally and now live in tx .. I've never had See's candy. J
how sad. With that said let me make my favorite candy treat include white chocolate . Ok maybe it isn't candy ... But now I want some. Ritz crackers with peanut butter dipped in white chocolate. Sigh. Happy sigh. Heaven.
Currently, you are my favorite person for coming up with this idea. That statement was not said with any intention of swaying said impartial drawing.
I'm sorta boring and looove the milk chocolate truffles. Frankly, I love anything truffle, but those be my favs. I also adore the chocolate lollypops (although I detest that they spell it incorrectly--my decision to eat them creates a moral dilemma since I typically refuse to support anything that purposely misspells). I also love the chocolate covered caramels. Divine. Mmmmm. Now I'm craving chocolate.
Being from NZ I'm a total See's Candy virgin. I don't even know what you're all talking about. But if you want a glimpse into my soul my favourite candy is chocolate, my favourite chocolate is milk, and my favourite chocolate as in "box of chocolates" is hazelnut praline. I adore that stuff.
No idea on the name for white chocolate, I like the french and Italian versions, but I would be your southern hemisphere contact. I am awesome at writing letters to politicians online, and a pro at saving with a click.
Never even had a lime truffle. Love the idea of calling WC paste. I will start now. My personal fave is milk chocolate truffle. I dig a hole in the bottom of the candies until I find it... don't want to "waste" calories on non-tasty sees.
I love the cherry filled one. Just kidding. Somewhere at the dump in the Inland Valley is a wad of spit out cherry-filled Sees. You're welcome, world!
White chocolate is ever-loving goodness on popcorn and pretzels.
I love the Bordeaux, PB suckers and the mints with the little dots on the bottom. So yummy!
(They do have Sees in UT, so don't exclude me in the contest...even though my husband doesn't suck up, he corrects.)
A correction to the "correction": Because paste (best name ever) doesn't contain cocoa solids, it ISN"T chocolate. My favorite See's candy is the one that Holly hasn't dug her finger into! I can definitely get behind almost anything with the words truffle or ganache in them!
Rachel, I have an interesting proposition for you. I will answer every question you asked, except I don't have a favorite See's Candy because I don't believe I've ever bought anything there. So rather than throw me out of the contest, can I be the winner instead so I can stop living a deprived life? You could send me all your favorites, and then they would surely be my favorites too! And everyone needs one more favorites buddy! (p.s. I'm amazing with Bill Murray quotes - "Ahoy! I sail!")
So here we go.
White Chocolate should be called Divinity, and Divinity should be called White Foam. That gives two misnamed treats appropriate names.
I pledge to write 8 letters for the letter writing campaign, because 8 is my favorite number. (I picked it as a little girl because that was the age I could be baptized. But then it turns out I was baptized three days before my 8th birthday, but 8 has remained my favorite number because 7 is an odd number and I'm an even numbers kind of girl).
You should know I have a U.S. address, so there is no problem with outrageous overseas shipping.
Thanks for your consideration!
sadly, i don't think i've ever had See's candy...but any combo of chocolate & caramel is a winner in my book! ;0)
caramel dark chocolate. Even better, those caramel-bound almonds half-dipped in dark chocolate. But samandholly reminded me of my adoration for ganache, so now my head is just spinning.
Personally, I just call white chocolate "bleccchhh," so that's my nomination.
I will write multiple letters to your congressperson, and I will write them in all caps with a sharpie marker. We should really frame it as an anti-socialist movement ("those liberals are subverting chocolate, just like they are subverting capitalism!"), I think we'd make more headway. He can get together with my rabid, slavering congressperson, who would also be taken in by any Glenn-Beck-ish type conspiracy theory.
Favorite Sees are the Cafe Latte lollipops. Must always have one in the movie theatre. Tradition started many many years ago and I cannot seem to break the habit.
btw...I am allergic to chocolate so while I had a couple of choice suggestions on what to call white chocolate, I would rather vote JessicaG the winner with paste. Love that answer!
I would have to call white chocolate the Pale Imposter. Almost an illiteration. My favorites are the fruit flavors. Raspberry, lemon, lime truffles. MMmmmmm.....
And I will start an email chain letter. Sorry that's about all my laziness will allow.
Correction of the correction to the correction: I never said that white chocolate IS chocolate...I simply said that it was a distant cousin. Rachel, Sam & Holly, can we still be friends? Will you please keep my name in the drawing? PLEASE?
Is this the most comments you've ever received on a post?
Holy Behind The Times Batman!
I know its too late for the drawing but I Lurveluvrvelurve the butterscotch squares, or the brown sugar ones. I always forget what they're called but i love them. And the carmels. And the purple candy sticks (yes - just the purples) and (I know you and Amanda will hate me for this) but the marzipan ones. They make me happy. Yum Yum Yum.
And on the "white chocolate" tip, in culinary circles its referred to as "white silk" because there is no chocolate involved whatsoever. Just sugar, eggs, and cream. SO *half* of your wish is my command because its just a matter of changing popular perception, not actual classification.
I pledge 5 letters, a blog post, 3 tweets and a Facebook notes on the subject. Its a wrong that must be made right.
Over and out
