How green is my thumb?

I've never grown anything from a seed before. Okay, once in the 3rd grade we had to put a lima bean in a baggie with a wet paper towel and it sprouted, but that was more disturbing than rewarding. Have you seen a sprouted bean in a baggie? It looks like an alien fetus, all hunched and wrinkled with tentacles reaching out to eat your face. I still get the heebs thinking about it.
But Spring got a hold of me and I said, "So what!" to my tiny balcony with little sunlight and I planted squash seeds. For fun. Well, and for squash. But I really don't even know what I'm doing. How big of a pot do I need? Right now it is in a small pot, so when do I transplant it? How much sunlight is it going to require? How often do I water? These are questions I'm going to have to answer soon because, lo, she grows!
I squealed with delight when I went out to water and found my squash had sprouted. And a full week sooner than anticipated. My squash is pretty advanced. I'm sure it will make the honor roll. Mama wants a bumper sticker for her car!

I'm so proud of you and your squash! I think you'll need a pretty big pot soon, although I saw an ad the other day for an upside down growing system that could just be your answer. We're going to attempt a real veggie garden this year. I haven't succeeded at any type of edible produce yet, so I'm hoping for success this year! Good luck.

What kind of squash? Just so you know I always plant more squah than needed because they get HUGE and that means less weeding. Congrats and know that you will most likely end up with enough squash to feed everyone at Las Brisas!!

YAY to you and your green thumb! I'm really good at killing plants so, I'm not going to offer any advice. But the sunshine is beautiful today, so baby squash must be a happy camper.

I don't mean to be Mr. Bitter, but I had to scrape my car this morning. I'm more than a little jealous of your warm weather. Good luck with the squash. Gina and I just planted some flowers in our feet pots on our patio. Hopefully they'll survive the latest freeze.

funny you should mention this b/c i am going to do a "garden" on my tiny balcony this year, too. actually, they call my balcony a "french" balcony, but i don't know what's so french about it. well, yes, i do - it's tiny. just like all those french women. geeze, i hate my french balcony.

but anyway, g'luck on the squash. i'm gonna do herbs, tomatoes, and something else. any suggestions for the something else?

french cucumbers, maybe?

You know what, all you need is one square foot space about 6 inches deep. If your pot is that big, you're good. Read "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew for great ideas for tiny balcony gardening.

Have you considered naming your squash? I realize that one day you will eat your new creation, but still....
