The Debate on Cookies

I was reading up on a debate on cookies. I shouldn't have because now all I can think about are cookies and do I have all the ingredients I need to make some tonight (No. Blast. I'm going to have to go to the store.) I use to hate making cookies. They take too much time. But I have discovered that the benefit of making cookies far outweigh the effort. The benefit being eating them until you're sick. Totally worth all the work.

The debate opened up with the definition of a cookie. I never actually thought that a cookie needed to be defined. It seems kind of obvious to me. But some of these people threw in all sorts of weird things. One person even said that a brownie falls into the category of cookie. That's just ludicrous. A cookie and a brownie are completely different. For one thing, you can't pull a pan of cookies out of the oven and put it on a towel in middle of the living room floor and eat out of it with a spoon as you and your girlfriends watch a Doris Day movie. Brownies are a category unto themselves.

I guess that maybe I'm a purist because I don't even consider cookie bars to be cookies. They fall under the bar/square category. I think in order for something to be considered a cookie it needs to be individually formed, preferably by elves, not baked then cut. It can be cut in the dough phase, but not after. I also believe that cookies should not be healthy. I have never tasted a healthy cookie that was any good. It's the butter and the sugar that make a cookie good and if you take those things out then you don't understand the point of a treat. You probably eat low fat ice cream, don't you. And if you give healthy cookies to people then you really don't understand the point of a treat, or a gift for that matter. I once got a plate of healthy cookies that were more bran muffin than cookie and I had to throw them away.

And a cookie should not contain raisins. They are an abomination. Not only because they're gross when baked but because they look deceptively like chocolate chips. Which makes them gross AND sneaky.

So I'm opening the debate to you. Tell me your favorite cookie and what your definition of one is.

And if you feel like bringing me a plate of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, heavy on the chips, I will not object.

I fully agree with you cookie/brownie philosophy. They are each their own category. As for my favorite cookie, well there are just too many favorites to narrow it down to one but oatmeal chocolate chip do sound really yummy right now.

My father insists that cookies must have some form of chocolate in them. Otherwise they fall into the "biscuit" category.

I was reading the same Slate article(s). I must say David Lebowitz' chocolate chip cookies are FREAKING tasty... That is a bit redundant though. It's got to be a pretty egregious travesty to ruin a chocolate chip cookie. I'm with David, cookies should be round.

Amen to the raisins! It's all about the chocolate.

I agree on most of your cookie/bar/brownie definitions. I'm neutral on the raisins, though. Don't love them, but don't hate them either. My favorite cookies are either molasses or ginger (including gingersnaps). Corner Bakery has some pretty awesome ones they sell only during the Christmas season. My mom makes some pretty great ones, too. Oh great, now I really want some!

I found out a few years ago that cookies are death to me but I have the yummiest cookie recipe called a 'Chewy fudge brownie cookie'. I'll have to e-mail it to you. And yes, raisins are evil. When I was little I would go to the trouble of picking them out and eating the rest of the cookie.

I actually like raisins in some cookies (please don't flog me!). Oatmeal cookies with coconut and raisins are yumm-o. Chocolate is better, but raisins have their place. If I gave you cookies, I would give you cookies sans raisins, just because I love you and don't want to be sneaky.

My favorite cookie? Any of the many varieties that I don't have to make or clean up afterward. Around this time of year I love Mexican Wedding cookies (they are also called Russian Teadies or snowball cookies). Yum.

I am with you on the raisins...those sneaky devils. Cookies=Brownies??? I think NOT.

Definitely no raisins in cookies. Gross. And, like you said, sneaky. I hate a ruined rice pudding that has bloated raisins floating in it. Nast. I feel the same about putting most nuts in cookies. I love an old-fashioned chocolate chip cookie, with NO NUTS. I also really like happy ranger cookies (a mishmash of cornflakes, choc. chips, butterscotch chips, coconut, and, of course, fat and sugar. Oh, and AMEN to the healthy cookies. Taking the fat out of cookies is killing any joy that comes with eating those cookies. Wow, I didn't realize I had that much to say about cookies. I just really love making them. And then eating them until I'm sick. I'm off to make some chocolate chip cookies.

I used to consider myself a better cook than baker, but I am changing my ways. I now have two no fail cookie recipes: a killer oatmeal chocolate chip that is Tyler's absolute favorite - he's disappointed if I make any other kind - and a little jewel called "Peanut Butter Temptations III" that I got off of allrecipes. I love baking now. It's like magic. If I feel like a treat I can actually just go into the pantry and in 20 minutes or so turn flour, sugar, butter and eggs into something heavenly. Magic, I tell ya!

By the way, Hi, Maija-Liisa!

You are correct on your assessment of raisins in a cookie. The truth of the matter is that the moment you add fruit to the cookie it is no longer a cookie. It must now be classified as a fruit cake.
As for my favorite. . . I'm thinking oatmeal butterscotch chip cookies. . . mighty tasty!

No fruit in cookies. Nuts please! And I am so sneaking Rice Krispies into the chocolate chip cookies next time. Genius.

(pssst - I saw your parents on saturday night! I know you know this already, but they are just great people.)

Monster Cookies! They have everything in them. Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chips, M & M's, and all kinds of yummy goodness.

Oh, and Caramelitas are pretty awesome too, but those would fall into the "bar/squares" category.

I SO agree about raisins being an abomination...and they're sneaky too!!

I started making these lemon raspberry thumbprint cookies a couple years ago that I love! They're a big hit with everyone. It's odd for me to like something so much that doesn't have chocolate, so you know this must be good!!

I agree that cookies should not be cut up, even if you put cookie dough in a large pan, they are still "bars." And raisins are also unneccessary. Speaking of fruit-flavored cookies; last night what I thought was a lemon cookie actually turned out to be pineapple-flavored. Not my favorite cookie.
My favorite cookie: Girl Scout Samoas (or whatever they are called now to be more PC). To me, they are the legalized version of crack.
