80 year olds should not be on Facebook

I blame Gloria entirely.

Gloria and I have been friends for a long time. Since we were freshmen in high school. Which was nearly 20 years ago. And now I'm going to put on my caftan and knit something. But whatever, I'm 80. And being 80 you can imagine how ridiculous it is that I joined Facebook.

I joined Facebook! That exclamation point means I'm screaming in horror and shame because I swore I never would. It just seems like something only kids who wear tight jeans and have over-styled hair do. But at lunch yesterday Gloria told me she joined and that all of these people we were friends with long long ago are on there and it sounded like fun to see what they were up to and if they look like they're 80. So I joined. And every single person I know on the planet seems to be on there. Which should make it okay, right? But, I'll tell you, I still feel like a sell out. And the whole, "Will you be my friend" thing makes me feel strangely pathetic.

What's sad is when you request a friendship and don't get a response. Rejection at facebook. Ouch.

Joining did seem better left to "the younguns" but I have been happily finding all sorts of people I had forgotten/lost touch with. Fun.

Your so funny! I said the same thing about facebook and then to my own dismay joined earlier this year. It's fun to reconnect....but I'm having insecurity issues from HS all over again. "will they be my friend?" "Do they know who I am?" I try to "accept" friends from all but there are these creepy men who "want to be friends" And I'm sorry I just have to say no. Anyway, happy friend finding :)

Welcome to the Facebook cult. I'm on there, too. I can't remember why I joined, but I did find a whole bunch of my old music friends, all of whom seem to have gone on to do great things with their degrees (most of them even got phds), which makes it a little embarrassing when I haven't done all that much with it since I graduated 6 years ago. Anyway, there happens to be a hot cellist that I found. He's on my friends list, too. Will you be my friend, Rachel?

Perhaps you don't know me as well as some of your other Facebook friends, but will you please friend me just so I can read your updates? They are sure to be entertaining.

I was so excited to see you have joined. It's so much fun catching up with everyone. I will say that the "superpoking" gets very annoying so not to worry, I won't be throwing any sheep at you.

Rachel, as a fellow 80-year-old, I'm a little embarrassed to say that I have a Facebook page, too. One of the students on my team wanted to organize a facebook group with all of the members of the dance team, so I let him set one up for me. I really don't know how to use it though.
