Grounded

I went to a lecture last night at the Claremont School of Theology that took a look at the priesthood from both the Catholic and Mormon perspectives. Really fascinating stuff. I learned all sorts of big words. And it has sent me to Wikipedia to study up on the Catholic church because the whole hierarchy confuses me. He called himself a pastor, and a priest, and his title is Right Reverend but he goes by Father Alexei and at one point someone in the audience referred a question to "the Bishop" and both he and Robert Millet (batting for the Mormons) stood up. Comedy, I tell ya. There were some really lovely and profound things said and as usual, whenever I get a perspective from other faiths it helps me understand and appreciate both their faith and my own faith all the more.

But as I've reflected on it throughout the day my mind keeps going back to one thing: Father Alexei had sensational hair. It was white and billowy and kind of sparkled in the overhead lights. He looked like Moses.

I am clearly 12 years old.

But, also 80. Because after the lecture we went out for yogurt and I broke my own curfew. I stayed out past 10 on a school night and I've been suffering all day because of it. Does this mean I'm grounded?

You got to see Robert Millet in PERSON!!!! (apparently I'm 12 as well...a big, geeky, nerdy, 12 year old) I would have loved to have been there. I'm going to have to get on their mailing list.

Father Alexei's hair...usually hair like that is reserved for Temple workers...lucky guy....

Robert Millet was my bishop when I was in high school, and he was a very stern and intimidating person in interviews. Was he more friendly during the lecture? That sounds like something I would have really enjoyed. Please tell me the Catholic guy had an Irish accent. We went to a Catholic wedding mass (which was 2 hours long, but fascinating), and both priests were Irish and I was captivated by their accents, especially when they got to the Latin bits. And yes, you're grounded.

Yeesh Rach, I have missed so much living in Ohio and then out here...out of the loop. You had him for a bishop and I have to admire him from afar...I suffer from "author-worship"...I truly geek out when someone has a "brush with fame" with one of "my" authors...I'm an idiot. Rock stars are cool and all, but if someone knows one of my authors, I'm a total groupie....

Don't worry about grounding yourself. Your body will do it for you by feeling unable to muster the energy to do anything other than lay around your house when you get home. That's what happens to me, because I'm older than you. So if you're 80, I'm like 83 or something.

Your situation was much like ours today in church. The lesson was really good and there were good comments, but I couldn't keep from focusing on the lady in front of me who had on a black dress, black shoes and orange and black striped socks. Seriously, I could only focus on her. I'm 7 years old. Signed, Gina (not Chris - even though he is looking over my shoulder).

Deb, You should definitely get on the mailing list because this was actually the second time I've seen him speak there.

And Rac, he was very personable and nice. Although I can see how you would get the stern impression as a teenager.

Rachel, you are grounded. And by grounded, I mean, stay home from work tomorrow and don't get out of your jammies all day. Make sure to stock up on essential movies and treats. It's the only way to recuperate from this sort of thing.
