Which Book?

Ugh. I have a cold. And last week I had the stomach flu. And three weeks before that I had consumption. Clearly my immune system is on the fritz. Or it has been compromised by alien life forces. Either way, I am tired - TIRED - of being sick.

Did you know that I wasn't sick once last year? Well, sick enough to take time off of work. I didn't miss a single day of work due to illness. I think it's safe to say that Chiquita is some sort of magical healing talisman. As if I needed any more reason to miss her.

So I've been cooped up for a few days and it's absolutely gorgeous around here and I thought that maybe some sunshine might be beneficial to my health so I strolled around Victoria Gardens for an hour. It sounds pretty, huh. Like a proper British garden. But it's actually an outdoor mall. But as far as malls go it is a lovely one. When I was done strolling I headed into Borders and, as the Book Buying Moratorium is back on, I jotted down book titles to find at the library.

This got me thinking that I haven't asked for book recommendations in a while. I would much rather try out a book that is tested by someone I trust then to go into one cold. So, why don't you tell me the best book you read last year. Don't be shy. I'm counting on you.

Yikes, all of my stuff has been non-fiction. I adore biographies. I'm currently reading the biography of Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, which is interesting. I also liked Brian Greene's "The Fabric of the Cosmos". My DIL is a huge Jodi Picoult fan...HUGE.

So...good luck. I'm looking forward to seeing what others recommend. I'm planning on one day being able to actually read for pure pleasure, which I will do by reading fiction....pure fiction....BWAHAHAHA

Best book last year...The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Cannot wait to read the next in the series. Amazing writer. He created a new world and cultures. Enjoyed it immensely.

The Hunger Games - I can't wait for the third in the series to come out.

I'm currently reading The Book Theif - and I'm excited to learn that the author is rather prolific. I think I will like other things written by him.

I always look at your GoodReads page to find good books. I'm on my second time with Empire Falls. I'm determined to finish it.
The Reader is the last book that I read that I LOVED!!
The Help is next up for our book club, but I haven't read it yet. I'm hoping it is really good.

I think the good stuff I read was recommended by you. I thoroughly enjoyed "The Historian," although it's super long and a bit slow. But if you're stuck in bed, it's a good one. I know you're not much into sci-fi/fantasy, but if you haven't read "Elantris" by Brandon Sanderson yet, I recommend it. It's excellent. It spends more time developing characters and less time describing monsters than most fantasy. But, like I said, I usually turn to your blog and Jenny's blog to find good things to read.

Another vote for The Book Thief (I've got it, you can borrow), which was super great (Emma's fave book of the year, BTW), but I wouldn't recommend other books by this author. I read his I Am the Messenger and it had too much bad language in it.

I have a whole stack of books in my "Rachel should read" pile. Let me know when you want a couple.

stephaniestempinski reads good books.

I enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible last year...but you've probably read that.

My favourite of all time is Ender's Game...which you've also probably read.
