Winged Crawly Things

For about an hour yesterday afternoon my bedroom was under attack.  I was sitting in my reading chair when I noticed something crawling across my window sill.  Something winged but not really flying.  And then I saw another.  And another.  So I opened the blinds and saw the horror.  Hundreds of winged crawly things were swarming the top of my window screen, desperately trying to get in.  I shut the window and did a quick scan of the room and noticed that a few dozen had breached the barricade and were moving across my ceiling like the Spanish Armada.  Who knows what they were after.  Possibly the Otter Pop stash.  I got right to business.  Crawling bugs I can handle.  Had they been using their wings I would have had to move to Australia.  I pulled out the vacuum and sucked them all up.  And then, armed with nothing by my wits and a can of Raid, I opened the window and took out the majority of them through the screen.  This is what was left.

I then proceeded to move everything away from the walls and violently rustle my bed linens to make sure that none were hiding out for a sneak attack later on.  Within the hour the survivors had retreated and the only evidence of the battle were the remains of two of their fallen comrades in the corner of my window sill that is behind my desk and thus a little hard to get to.

I'm giving myself a Medal of Valor.  You're invited to the presentation ceremony.

How scary! I'm glad things turned out ok. Not to scare you or anything but those look like termites. I remember the great termite invasion of '97 in my parents house. My mom and I were sitting watching TV when all of a sudden we were under attack. Two days later our house was tented! But maybe these are just look-a-likes.

PS - the above comment was from me, Andrea. I didn't realize Andrew was still logged in.

I might have to agree with Andrea on this one. I had very similar looking creatures in my last apartment. I looked them up online - termites.

I agree that you deserve a Medal! I'll buy you an extra chocolate milk on Saturday for your valiant effort!

Oh the horror! Have you ever heard the story about the baby spiders in my bedroom? No? Just think thousands (probably more like a hundred, but I'm given to exaggeration when it comes to bug attacks) of baby spiders hanging from my ceiling and hovering over my bed right as I'm getting ready to bed down for the night. I'm going to leave you hanging with that.

One time in Mississippi, ants took over my dirty laundry basket and were swarming around the floor. I didn't notice them until I was standing in my closet, next to the basket, deciding which shirt to wear, and suddenly my feet started stinging. I looked down, and hundreds of ants were crawling on my feet, biting as they went. And that is why I hate ants. And also why I'm glad you had the presence of mind to suck those bad boys up in a vacuum right away. I'm glad you survived your ordeal.

Brave, Brave friend. I would get those things checked out - since it sounds like a termite. You don't want to think about bugs eating the foundation of your home while you sleep. Sorry - did I make you think about bugs eating the foundation of your home while you sleep?

The Australia thing was a big joke, right?

I lump Australia in with Africa when it comes to pests and scary things, winged or otherwise. Possibly more afraid of Australia.

This sounds awful. I'm glad you made it out alive.

This happened to me when I was visiting Gans in Virginia. I blogged about it. That's my version of "helpful".
